Ocracoke Island is this peaceful little fishing village
on the Outerbanks of North Carolina. Positioned between the Pamlico Sound and
the Atlantic Ocean, this retreat is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore
owned by the National Park Service. Ocracoke, which is only accessible by water
or air, has no glamorous highrise hotels right on the beach or boardwalks to
clutter the view
Just the most pristine unpopulated beaches this side of
the United States
On any given day, you'd be lucky to see a tourist on
the beach
If you do run into someone, they would most likely be a native
Ocracoke resident fishing
Either right off the beach or down on South
Point
There, you can catch Flounder or Blue Fish like there's no
tomorrow
......
The town of Ocracke is at the southern most
soundside of this 14 mile long, 3 mile wide island
Down by Silver
Lake
That's where most of the action is, if that's what you'd call
it
Sure there are restaurants, hotels and bars surrounding Silver
Lake
. But that's not why most people are attracted to this get away
It's the fishing
Via the charter boats or right off the surf or by gill
netting or by raking for clams
For the Charters there's the Pamlico Sound
or, just a mere 30 miles away, is the Gulf Stream and plenty of shipwrecks to
fish around
Tuna, Dolphin, Spanish Mackerel, Black Sea Bass and Amberjack
make up some of the variety of fish that populate these waters
...... The most known landmark on the island is its
lighthouse
Built in 1823, the structure is only stands 75 feet tall, but
one can still see it for some 14 miles. It is one of the oldest lighthouses
still in operation on the East Coast
. It is actually a predecessor of a
pervious lighthouse that was destroyed by lightning in 1818
It has
endured many of hurricanes over the years
..... Then there is the
legend of the pirate, Edward Teach aka Blackbeard
. Blackbeard haunted the
East Coast, as far down as the Caribbean, capturing and pillaging innocent
vessels in route to America
See, the sea is under constant natural change
and many a boats fell victim to it's ever changing tides and drifting sand
bars
. Then, Backbeard would go in for the kill
Supposedly, many
times, Blackbeard and his crew of 300 men, would "hangout" in Silver Lake and
take inventory of the booty they'd captured from flailing ships
The most
eerie thing about Blackbeard is that he would light sulfur matches and stuff
them behind his ears giving his victims the illusion that he was on fire
In 1718, Blackbeard was killed on Ocracoke Island in a fight with the
British...
